What Are the Best Drill Bits for Wood

Posted on June 23, 2021 by Ruwag UK

There are many different drill bits for wood. It can be a little confusing to know which bit is right for your project. A simple answer to this question is that it ultimately depends on what your project entails.

a.) Drilling holes into wood is quick and relatively simple. You can use a good multi-purpose bit for basic drilling through or into the wood.

b.) Making larger holes or enlarging holes gets a little more complex. For those types of projects, you would need a bit that is specially designed to make large, smooth holes with no ragged edges.

c.) Other projects that require flat bottomed holes will need bits designed for this purpose.

With that in mind, it is important to first consider your project. This will help you choose the best bits of wood, to get the best results.

Choosing Drill Bits For Wood

Here are some of the most commonly used drill bits for wood-working projects.

Twist Bits

These bits can be used for a wide variety of projects. They have a spiral flute that allows them to drill into wood, making clean, even holes. The twist removes dust as it moves through the wood. For best results, it helps to drill halfway through the wood, then, turn the wood to drill through to the other side. This will ensure a smoother, cleaner hole.

Brad Point Bits

Brad point bits have a centring tip and a ground-cutting edge. They have a twisted flute and similar shank to twist bits. They have a W-shaped tip that makes small, precise holes. Compared to regular multi-purpose or twist bits, these bits make much cleaner holes.

Flat Bits

For larger holes, a flat bit is recommended. Also known as spade bits, these bits have a unique flat, spade-like shape. A longer centre point is flanked by two smaller points. They are roll forged and also have a centring tip and ground-cutting edge.

Auger Bits

Auger bits are ideal for making large holes in harder wood. They have a single spur that allows them to create large, smooth holes. They have a threaded tip that requires minimal force when drilling. These bits often have triangular or hexagon shanks that secure them more effectively in the drill chuck.

Forstner Bits

This type of bit is used to create flat-bottomed holes. They are ideal for large, clean holes. With their unique design, they create a smooth finish. The smooth, clean finish made by Forstner bits is what makes them a good alternative to spade bits.
